In Scott Cole’s class, participants will make a brass, ball-bearing, turning end, sidelight, isosceles, 7 point, 3-mirror kaleidoscope. Emphasis will be on making an exceptional scope, including lampworked and dichroic objects. The class is appropriate for individuals who have made at least one scope previously. The class fee is $145, and attendance is limited to fifteen. Saturday, June 12. 8:30AM 3-4 hours.
Laura Wilde's class is directed a beginning scope makers and will create one of two acrylic scopes; the students will get to choose from a large variety of papers and photos to cover the exterior. Mirrors will be pre-cut, but the students will assemble the systems for these 2-mirror, end- or side-lit scopes. There will be a large selection of items for the object chamber, though anyone attending is welcome - and encouraged - to bring their own beads, bits of wire, and glass pieces. The finished pieces will be either her "Rondel" style or the "Secret Windows" style, with a dry or liquid cell. Class size is limited to 12, and the class fee is $85. KALEIDOSCOPE REFLECTIONS 2010, the 20th Brewster Kaleidoscope Society’s Convention is scheduled for June 11-13, 2010 in Santa Clara, California with a special pre-convention welcome planned for Collectors on the evening of June 10th. The convention brings together kaleidoscope enthusiasts who are collectors, artists and retailers from all over the world. “In my personal experience the Brewster Society Conventions have been some of the most welcoming and friendly events that I have ever attended. Everyone is passionate about kaleidoscopes. It is a great place to learn, meet friends and to feast your eyes. No one is a stranger for long. My motto is… leave no scope unturned.”---Mary Theresa Boll, Convention Registrar-artist and collector The venue of this year’s Brewster Kaleidoscope Society Convention is Santa Clara, California, close to both the San Jose and San Francisco airports and right in the midst of many tourist attractions, great restaurants, and convenient transportation. Further, the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara has been extremely responsive to our group’s requirements. Our meeting rooms on the first floor and mezzanine of the hotel are spacious and accommodating. From the time you register in the Santa Clara foyer, you’ll notice our creature comforts. Many well known artists have already committed to attending the convention including Charles Karadimos from Maryland, Carolyn Bennett from New Jersey, Robert and Ann Anderson from Wisconsin, Koji Yamani from Tokyo, Bob Coleberd from California, Judith Paul from California, Peggy and Steve Kittleson from Iowa, Ken and Dore Wilhoite from California, Scott Cole from North Carolina, Erik Van Cort from Massachusetts and Laura Wilde from California. As of today, four new BKS member artists will be exhibiting for the first time at the BKS convention and they are Beverly Forester from Oklahoma, Alex Bouteneff from Connecticut, Ichiro Seino from Chibakan, Japan and Butch and Donna Bartell from California.
Special Convention EventsA special pre-convention event for Collectors is planned for Thursday night. Collectors are invited to an informal after-dinner reception in the Cypress Room. You’ll be able to catch up with friends and test yourself on a fun Brewster Quiz, courtesy of Kevin Kohler. Collectors, you will not want to miss this! BKS Convention Retrospective is scheduled before the unveiling and will include a video presentation from all the previous conventions. The Retrospective will be emceed by Jean and Karl Schilling, looking back over BKS’s 20 years of kaleidoscopic enthusiasm, and recognizing important contributions of many of our artists and leaders.
The Display/Sales Room will be open to BKS members Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, and then to BKS members and the public on Sunday. Within the display room, in addition to enjoying the new and exciting kaleidoscopes, you will be able to view the scopes included in the Retrospective, as well as a wonderful photographic history, created by Carolyn Bennett. Because the theme is Retrospective/20th anniversary, we are asking each artist to bring one or two of their very first scopes (not for sale, but for display only on their sales tables). Carolyn Bennett had bravely stated that she has hers already dusted off. Silent Auction: The theme is “Retrospective Reflection”. This is an event based on the joy and fun of Kaleidoscopes. Auction kaleidoscopes may be serious or silly but should reflect retrospective theme of the convention. Auction pieces will be on display in the sales room on Friday and Saturday. The scopes will be moved to the banquet room where the final bidding will take place. Winning bidders will be announced at the banquet. On Friday night, after dinner on your own (at one of the many local gourmet, ethnic, or theme restaurants), you are invited to join your friends in the Cypress Room for after-dinner snacks and, if you wish, your personal kaleidoscope marketplace. Here, should you desire, you will have opportunities to trade, auction (silent) or sell kaleidoscopes from your personal collection or acquire some from fellow members. Simply bring scopes you wish to trade or sell or bring photographs with detailed descriptions (each member is limited to three). Copies of The Kaleidoscope Collectors Guide will be available to help with the process. Whether you intend to trade or not, the event is a great opportunity to catch up with your friends.
On Saturday several excellent artists are offering “make your own kaleidoscope classes”. Classes are being offered by Koji Yamani, Scott Cole, Judith Paul, Laura Wilde, Ken and Dore Wilhoite, and Steve and Peggy Kittleson. See details in the Class Information section above. Table Topics: Additionally, throughout the day Saturday, the nearby Cypress Room will be reserved for us to meet informally with discussion leaders and fellow members to relate the issues which you have said are most important. These include the future direction of The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society; building public recognition for kaleidoscopes; documenting your collection; maintaining, fixing and mending scopes; discussing our personal favorites; and starting a Brewster Blog. The Brewster Convention Banquet, chaired by Peggy Kittleson and Peg Sabath, to be held in the Magnolia Ballroom. In response to this year's theme, Retrospective, you are encouraged to dress in a style commemorating one of the last 20 years or one of the cities in which we have met (or both). Plans for the banquet include great food, a superb DJ, many door prizes, and lots of fun.
